ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Law enforcers in five southeastern states are joining forces over the next week to help keep drivers safe.
They're stepping up enforcement as part of the Take Back Our Highways campaign.
Every state bordering Alabama is involved, and this is the first year Georgia will participate.
"We do have a lot of wrecks this time of year," said Cpl. Scott McClure, Georgia State Patrol.
More traffic increases the chances of deadly accidents on state roads.
"Studies have shown that during this week we have people traveling to and from the beach," said McClure.
Starting Saturday all states bordering Alabama are helping out Alabama.
Public safety officials in Alabama, Tennessee, Mississippi, Florida and Georgia will see extra patrols on the highways.
Take Back Our Highways is a program Alabama came up with to increase safety on the roads.
"Alabama came up with the campaign to help reduce their fatalities and it's a good way for us to help reduce our fatalities as well," said McClure.
Drivers along the state lines will be more heavily patrolled.
"Quitman County, and Clay County we have a lot of counties in this southwest region that border up with Alabama," said McClure.
They'll be checking for any traffic infractions and conduct sobriety and driver license checkpoints.
"It's all border lines and highways running in and out of Alabama we usually join up with them and do our usual road checks for DUI's aggressive Driving," said McClure.
The most important thing they'll tell you is to make sure you and you and your family are strapped in.
The Take back our highways program started three years ago.
The crackdown runs through next Friday.
