ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Otha Butler, an 88 year old Baconton man disappeared while on his way to play golf in Albany Thursday.
He was found this morning. He had taken a wrong turn on the highway yesterday and ended up in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
His daughters say they were stunned how much help they got from the community when they reported him missing. They think he became confused, and drove to Columbus, got on I-85, and followed it through Atlanta to Spartanburg, 266 miles away, where at 2 AM a police officer stopped him going the wrong direction on the expressway.
His daughter Rosa Ward said, "He said he was meeting him head on going the wrong way. So they took him in and took care of him. Pampered him really."
Another daughter, and Dougherty Co. Coroner Emma Quimbley said "I just thank Dougherty County, Mitchell County, just the entire state of Georgia and South Carolina. And God, for bringing Daddy home to us."
Butler's son drove to pick up his father this morning, and tonight the family is welcoming Mr. Butler back home with a celebration cookout.
