VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - Valdosta Technical College will have a new president in a matter of weeks.

Dr. Ray Perren will begin his presidential duties on July 1st.  He's already looking forward to what he says will be his greatest challenge:  overseeing a successful merger when Valdosta Tech and East Central Technical College of Fitzgerald merge in 2010.

Though Perren served as president of East Central Tech for two years, he says merging schools has presented a unique set of challenges.

"Our colleges all have the same basic curriculum and same basic set-up, but they all take on a culture of their own," says Perren.  "Pulling those two cultures together to make a new college culture is one of the greatest challenges."

Once the merger takes place, the college will serve one of the largest geographic districts of a college in the state.  The college's new district will actually account for 8% of Georgia's geographic area.
