COOK COUNTY, GA (WALB) - A husband and wife are behind bars for the brutal murder of a Sparks nightclub owner.

On the evening of May 8th, nightclub owner James Statum was stabbed 60 times with an ice pick and robbed.

"It was almost like rage," says Cook County Sheriff John Daughtrey.  "It shocked me, and I'm sure it shocked the rest of the community too. It was about as brutal as you see them."

Now, Jason Treadaway and his wife Billie Jo, from Adel, are charged with the crime.  On Saturday, the Treadaways were arrested for an armed robbery they committed at the MegaMart in Adel just hours after the murder.

The Treadaways fled the scene in an old Crown Victoria.  The car had significant damage, and a two-toned trunk.  Thanks to these distinguishing characteristics, it didn't take long for someone to recognize the vehicle.

Investigators received reports of that same car leaving Statum's nightclub at the time of the murder.

"We developed enough information on Tuesday afternoon to actually charge Mr. Treadaway with murder in the case," says Sheriff Daughtrey.

It appears Billie Jo waited in the car while Jason committed the murder.  He also robbed Statum, making off with a mere thirty dollars from the cash register.

The Treadaways then tried to dispose of the ice pick by leaving it in a trash can at a park in Hahira.

While the local residents are disturbed by the details of the crime, they are also relieved that those responsible are no longer on the streets.
