PELHAM, GA (WALB) - Firefighters were busy overnight in Mitchell County battling a warehouse blaze that badly damaged a business. It started around 1:30 Tuesday morning at Redico in Pelham.
Fire crews from Pelham, Camilla, and Autry State Prison lined the 200 block of Progress Avenue where intense flames ripped through the front of warehouse.
Redico, which is located off U.S. 19, is a fabrication and welding company that specializes in refrigeration supplies. The office section of the building was destroyed but firefighters were able to knock down the flames, preventing fire from spreading to the back of the warehouse where highly combustable materials were stored.
"There was a lot of oxygen and setaline in the building. They had a storage on the side which we were able to contain to keep it from getting to that. So, we had a lot of combustable material in the building. It was very important that we stopped it. The men did a great job. We were able to get in there quickly and stop it before that happened," said Assistant Fire Chief Ivey Godwin, Pelham Fire Department.
It took firefighters about an hour to get the fire completely under control. The structure was left standing but officials much of the interior sustained heavy smoke and heat damage.
No one was inside when the fire started. Investigators were expected to arrive later Tuesday to determine the cause.
According to a company profile, Redico was established in 2005 and has 30 employees.
