ASHBURN, GA (WALB) - The Chief of the Ashburn Police Department has been fired from his job.

City council members voted unanimously Thursday night to terminate Bryant McCard who had served as Ashburn's top cop since 2007.

City officials and Ashburn Police officers met at city hall Friday morning to discuss his replacement.

City manager Ben Taylor says McCard was let go because his goals were different from those shared by council members.

"The city council decided by unanimous vote that the police chief's goals for the community and their goals no longer coincided. So they decided to release him of his duties," said Taylor.

Former Macon Police Chief Jim Brooks has been named interim chief. Officials say he will play a role in recruiting a permanent chief.

McCard took over as police chief one month after Ben Sumner resigned from the position in February 2007.
