VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - An organization in Valdosta is planning to hike 22 miles to raise awareness for veteran suicide.

The hike is set to begin at 8 a.m. near the corner of Bemiss and Moody roads and end at Azalea Church of God, on Saint Augustine Road.

Joshua Powell is the founder of the organization, Project Zero, and is hosting the event.

Powell said that he wants to ensure that veterans who are struggling know that suicide is not their only option.

“And help families that have already experienced this loss but also help those who are dealing with PTSD so they don’t get to that point where they know that there’s somebody there that’s got their back and we’re here to talk, listen, whatever you want to do, just to help and share love," said Powell.

Powell said they chose 22 miles because on average, there are 22 veteran suicides per day. He said they will continue this event every year until everyone who has PTSD is helped and families don’t have to suffer anymore.
