Monroe Basketball forfeits games due to ineligible player

ALBANY, GA (WALB) - As the basketball season begins to wrap-up and teams are getting ready for playoffs, the Monroe Tornadoes look to be out of state playoff contention this season.

After having to forfeit all their games, due to an ineligible player.

Due to a periodic review of student credits, it was found that a student athlete on the basketball team was credit deficient.

Because student athletes must maintain a satisfactory academic progress to remain eligible to play, the G-H-S-A required Monroe to vacate any wins with that player active.

Not only has the team dropped to 0-23 on the year, they are placed on warning status.

“In terms of the team, i’m sad for the team," said Dougherty County School System Superintendent Kenneth Dyer. "They played, they had a tremendous year. They played their hearts out. I went to several of the games. So the student athletes, they have to suffer through this, through no fault of their own.”

The Tornadoes could be playing their last game of the season Friday against Crisp County.
