Albany Pedestrian Hit by Dump Truck

ALBANY, GA (WALB) - A man in a motorized wheelchair was hit by a Dougherty County dump truck driver Friday around 12: 15 p.m.

According to the Albany Police Department, a 2016 Peterbilt Dump truck owned by the county was stopped, headed west on 7th Avenue at the intersection of North Jefferson.

Samuel David Gaines, Jr. 78, was in a motorized wheelchair on the sidewalk on the north side of 7th Avenue next to the truck, according to a release.

When the dump truck began turning right next onto N. Jefferson Street, Gaines began crossing the intersection at the same time.

The dump truck driver hit Gaines in the intersection causing serious injuries and damage to his wheelchair.

Gaines was transported to Phoebe Emergency Center by EMS. According to police, Gaines crossing signal was on and appeared to not have been used.

No charges will be filed.
