ALBANY, GA (WALB) - There could be up to five new businesses and one new restaurant going in where the old Kmart on Dawson Road used to be in Albany.
Before the Kmart shopping center was closed, busy shoppers used to hustle in and out of these doors, now locked; but they might not be for much longer. Up to five new businesses and one new restaurant could be coming to fill the empty store fronts here.
The Kmart shopping center on Dawson Road in Albany closed in April of 2018.
Now it's going to be divided into two or three new potential outlets.
This would allow room for four or five new businesses and one restaurant to fill the empty building. It's not clear which businesses will come just yet.
“It’s good for everybody. To have such a big shopping center that’s vacant pretty much in the middle of the highest trafficked commercial area, is not a good thing, so it really is going to be a huge help,” said Paul Forgey, Director of the Planning Commission.
The city commission did approve reclassifying the space now as a shopping center rather than a retail center, which gives the developer more room for parking spaces.
Now that 2525 Dawson Road has officially been named a shopping center, there will be plenty of room for more cars and shoppers to fill the parking lot once the new businesses get here.
